Artisans - Andrew
Purchin
Andrew Purchin was born in 1962 and grew up in the Los Angeles
area where he started painting seriously at the age of 16.
While in high school, he won a Bank of America Award for
a painting of a construction worker in pink.
Purchin
has been an artist in residence with The Fields Project
on two occasions in which he lived on farms in Ogle County,
Illinois sharing his art process with the farmers as he
painted scenes from their lives. Purchin most recently was
awarded a partial fellowship to be a resident at the Vermont
Studio Center.
Purchin’s
work has been published in American Artist. His work has
been exhibited and honored in many venues including The
Santa Cruz Art League, The Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary
Arts and Atelier Gallery.
I
paint directly from life just about all of the time. I see
with my whole body, all of my senses. I go back to the same
locations. I form a relationship with a place.
I
use composition, drawing, perspective, brush stroke, color,
texture and rhythm so as to reflect back most accurately
who I am in that expression. I strive to capture the big
picture and the subtle picture.
I
am interested in doorways to the horizon, paths, deep shadows,
rough textures in contrast to smooth textures. I play with
time. Sometimes I just try to capture one time of day and
at other times I am interested in the change of light and
shadow and/ or the movement of clouds and grasses.
When
I paint I look to transcend my experience of a place so
that what I see changes me. It is my hope that something
in the viewer transforms by being with my work.
