Artisans - Lauren Black, Painter
 I
started painting after finishing a career as a classical
dancer. I have been painting for 15 years. I received my
BFA with a major in painting at Pacific Northwest College
of Art in Portland Oregon. I can get lost in the process
of creating something different and unique, I love to paint,
experiment, and play, washing out, scratching and distressing
the surfaces of the work. I have been drawn more and more
to mixed media, using paper and other mediums to create
depth and interest. Five paintings from this latest series
were recently purchased and hung in the lobby of the historic
Henry Weinhard building in the Pearl District of Portland
Oregon. I have had numerous solo shows and have been featured
in several galleries here in Portland.
This
series was inspired by a close up photo I found of an "eye"
on a moth wing, it was decayed and organicyet beautiful
and alive. The wing was a translucent green. I then went
to the library to find more photos and was once again made
to feel as small as who I am in the scheme of things, my
creativity bows to the world about me. I work on wood panel
which I coat with dress pattern paper. I then lay down textured
paper coating it with a rust medium. I layer acrylic paint
until I have the color the way I want it. The high gloss
finish medium is then applied which separates the layers
of paint which adds to the depth that I am continually exploring
and creating. I would hope that this series sparks a dialogue
within ourselves to explore our relationship to the natural
world and it's laws.
