I
became interested in glazes in 1962 when I took my first
ceramic class. One day, I happen to walk into the kiln room
and I saw some crystalline pottery that had just been taken
out of the kiln. They were so beautiful; it was love at
first sight. I switched my major to Fine Art and pursued
my interest in creating beautiful objects. Ceramics was
my first love and I studied under several international
know ceramists at SJSU during the 60's. Almost 40 years
later I began working with crystalline glazes. I've been
working with them for several years and creating pottery
that compliments the glazes. I work toward creating a special
relationship between a pot's form and the crystalline glaze
used to decorate its surface. Sometimes a pot only needs
a few crystals in the glaze to create a beautifully finish
piece. But, because these glazes have a mind of their own,
different glaze combinations and firing sequences are needed
to achieve the desired results. Crystals have many unique
and subtle visual qualities. Every time I open the kiln
there are new discoveries because not two pieces are ever
the same. My quest is to explore the possibilities!
Crystalline
glazes are unique, intriguing and difficult to work with
but they are some of the most beautiful glazes you have
every seen. The crystals in crystalline glazes are grown
in the glaze during the glaze firing of the pottery. The
chemicals that make-up the glaze and the colorants used
in the glaze dictates how the glaze is fired. They also
influence the type of crystals that will grow in the glaze.
The firing cycle greatly influences the final appearance
of the glaze and its crystals. The pottery is fired to its
maturing temperature and then the kiln is cooled to the
temperature where the crystals grow. The glaze is held at
this temperature to grow the crystals. Some crystals seem
to flat on the surface and others grow from the clay surface
through the glaze coat and protrude above the glaze surface.
Some glazes create cluster of crystals scattered over the
surface of the pot. These glazes create a striking contract
between the glaze’s background color and the color
and shape of the crystal clusters. One of the most intriguing
aspects of crystalline glazes is the fact that they have
a wide range of subtle and complex visual qualities, and
these qualities vary with each firing.
